353s and so forth

I thought for a little about the new gear dropping from Zul G and Zul A.  They're pretty much raid quality loot, at least from my standpoint.  Anything better than 346 is raid level.  Anything AT 346 is raid-ready.  do we all agree?  great.  But why the epic gear already?  in 5-man heroics? why not give us another raid? back in Wrath, we got Naxx first, then Ulduar, then ToC and that was when we got the instance that gave us purples in normal and heroics.

Aparently something is different this time around.  In cata, we didnt get one raid with four wings.  Instead we got three raids totaling the size of Naxx, or something like that.  it may seem like a lot, but doing all three of the current raids is not much different than doing all four wings of Naxx, then Saph+KT.  Clever of Blizz.  I always figured Naxx could have been four or five different necropolises. That would have kept raids short (and now its even shorter that you can skip straight to Sapphiron and KT without going through any of the wings).  In any case, it wasnt until we get ToC that normal heroics dropped level 219 epics.  Yes, they were all purple.  It was sort of an unreal experience going through it to gear up. Actually, people would run the normal version of the instance just farming for gear so that they can join raids in Ulduar or ToC (most people skipped Naxx at that point).

Maybe it is the fact that there are three, albiet short, raids already out. (just think, ulduar split into three or four sections, icecrown split into four, ToC with three different versions and in each version three different bosses, stuff like that).  We now have a 5-man that will drop almost-raid loot.  this is wonderful for two types of people.  one, it is great for the raider who has been farming for a certain item to complete his 359 sets.  One item that may have been missing could be a wand, or a trinket. The time commitment to this instance would be more since the individual will have to return to this dungeon, in heroic, daily to see if his item will drop.  Although the instance may take about half the time as a raid might, he will be running it several times throughout the week to get his item.  more time played, i say, and a win for blizzard ultimately.

Second, the new instances appeal to those who are bad.  yes, it's the ones who are reliant on gear to boost their play, instead of relying on sound tactics, paying attention, understanding your class strengths vs. a certain encounter, etc. (aka. Skill).  As i believe, having 346 in every slot makes a player more than able to participate in a raid.  Having 359s will allow the player to more easily participate in a raid.  Bosses will die faster, mana will be a little more plentiful, tanks will mitigate just a wee more and healers will be taxed less.  That's the idea.  But i do believe that there are those in the population who will irrationally say to themselves that they do not have "enough" gear to participate in raids although they are decked out in 346s.

The process of gearing and progression is simple.  Go into a raid with your 346s, kill several bosses and equip the loot that will enchance your performance.  after several weeks of this + valor points, you'll (collectively) be ready to take on the final boss of the encounter with zero guarantee of success, but at least you'll have a shot.  But most of these people stand in bad or in front of the boss, dont know where to run during certain events in the fight, they are inefficient with mana, they dont use their cooldowns, trinkets or even some obscure abilitiy in their arsenal like an interrupt. in short, they play badly. in order to counter this bad play, they believe that they need better gear, when, in fact, they need to learn to play.

So for the two groups of people looking at these instance i am hoping there is a third group. the one that doesnt have all the time to raid (and i have very little excuse any more now that the raids are almost the size of normal dungeons. heck, think of HoO. you can call it a raid, tune it for 10/25 man and no one will know the difference), but would like to keep playing for some kind of progression can go to these two dungeons and somewhat progress.  the drops will not be as juicy as the raid drops, but you can see clearly that the drops are far superior to the blues they're currently wearing, gemmed and enchanted.

With that, this double-edge sword just dropped yesterday (for the competent raider as well as the bafoon who blames everything on gear) in the form of Patch 4.1, more specifically Zul A and Zul G 5-mans.  These encounters will be fun, challenging and rewarding.  Let's not worry too much about the gear farming for these two instances, as i am sure i'll probably be running these instances over and over again on my alts just to get them geared up (as their gear is much more preferred over regular or heroic gear from the original cata dungeons).  Lets worry more about enjoying this game and taking up the challenge as it should be.  lets not forget that difficult content should be just that, difficult, and that there's no excuse to suck if you only have heroic-esque gear.  heck, i only have heroic gear on my dk, with two 359 rep pieces, but i do plan on kicking butt in each of the two new instances.  for me, as the guy who sees these two new instances as new do-able content (ie. not a raid) and a chance to improve on some pieces of gear, i'll enjoy maybe a month of this before i start to wonder what firelands (and its new questing zone) will be like.

The More Things Change...

As the old saying goes, the more things change, they more they stay the same (or it stays the same, or whatevers).  The point is clear.  its all the same.  everything is recycled.  rant time?  yes.

The problem is, yet again, dungeons.  Oh i loved the first few weeks of Cata.  The dungeons were hard.  Every dungeon was difficult.  Every dungeon had wipes.  At the end of the night, i had to redo some macros, or prioritize differently than before.

I started cata with my warrior, Ithacus.  he's an orc.  they're pretty no-nonsense type of warriors bent on killing things, usually by overpowering them as opposed to out-maneuvering them.  i'll leave the finesse for dainty night elves and blood elves.  but the human counterpart in the world of azeroth are the orcs.  and they are fierce.  they rush into a fight with zero regard for their own well-being with the one purpose to obliterate their foes.  Ithacus was one of them.  he would charge+shout, rend, drop a thunderclap, then cleave+sweeping strikes and bladestorm til he died.  this happened on every wrath heroic between 4.01 and cata launch.  imagine the fun i was having with ARMS warrioring.  =P  yes.  arms... i said it.  Fury my ass.  anyway, moving along...

(to accomplish the above, i had two macros.  one for charge/shout, which had me tap the button twice.  once to charge, and again to shout while i was in the middle of a charge.  easy.  second is the sweeping strikes macro'ed to cleave.  since i only use cleave for multiple mobs, adding a sweeping strikes to it always makes it worthwhile.  especially in wrath dungeons.  you need sweeping strikes on as much as possible, because that's how the game was played. i rend once per fight, so that's not macroed anywhere.  i thunderclap often, so that's its own separate button)

Then Things Changed
Enter Cata.  Life was gleeful.  every dungeon was rough, especially when i was asked to tank for half of them. i was essentially learning two players at once. but overall, i was learning to wait a little to dps.  I was using pummel or body slam or whatever it is.  i forget.  having two specs make it difficult to remember.  but i know i was using my interrupts more.  i found that in the battle between slam and heroic strike, heroic strike wins. i finally started using colossus smash and not just when the "thing" procs.  you can tell i have no idea what the name of the proc is, but i know what it looks like and press colossus smash accordingly.   i even back up and hit intercept now, whenever something needs to be stopped, like a heal from this Adepts in Vortex Pin.

Overall, pulls were thought out a bit more.  There's more consideration to each class' CC abilities.  I have learned quite a few things about CC, like who can CC what, and who should CC first, etc. I also know that no boomkin has ever used hibernate on a dragon.  none.  the more obvious CCs are usually a hunter's trap and a mage's polymorph.  no one figured maybe you can bind an elemental, or banish it.  or hey, let the boomkin entangle roots and hiberante.  two in one. yay!  several paladins couldnt find Repentance, but they found them eventually.  rogues often use distract before they sap and deathknights.... well they're pretty much useless for now.

Apart from the crowd controls, there's the other obvious good things that changed about the fights themselves.  Mobs lived longer, did more damage, had better abilities and caused a little more trauma. thats great!!!  no seriously, my wrath-era-yawns turned into, "oh hey!! something new!"  i had to watch my surroundings more, had to interrupt more whirlwinds and AoE casts and all that good stuff.  The healer would be OOM after almost every fight.  YAY!!!! that's so awesomesauce.  people were at half health, or less, after every fight too.  awesomesauce with added tobasco!  and at the end of pretty much every fight, it felt like i actually earned that kill.  awesomesauce that's better than Hooter's 911 chicken wings!!

But They Stayed the Same
After leveling my warrior to 85 and getting a few dungeons in, i started leveling my deathknight with my girlfriend's priest.  we leveled through hyjal, deepholm, the ramhaken part of uldum and finally twilight highlands.  While leveling, we did queue for all the dungeons along the way.  What my girlfriend felt was that she had better mana efficiency, which is good. she didnt lose much of the difficulty in healing each fight, but she did find it less stressing when her mana bar was twice as full as usual.  she has two priests, both 85 now. leveling the first one 80-85 was omg hard.  leveling the second one 80-85 was a lot eaiser.  i guess blizzard made a few tweaks. but i am sidetracked.... lets get back to the subject.

I noticed something when i was dps (Arms Warrior and Frost DK), that somehow not a lot of people knew how to dps.  really?  yes. now i dont mean CC, or interrupts, or even moving out of Bad, which is required.  but many of them were doing less dps than me.  there were hunters and boomkins doing 3k dps.  just 3k, at level 83.  they may have had to CC, which was obvious if the tank asks for them, but they did not know how to interrupt spellcasts, dont know how to deal with adds, dont know how to avoid bad stuffs.  many folks are learning, true. but how many times does it take for a summoned elemental to shoot a beam at you before you realize maybe you should kill it before it reaches you? slow it down. run away. kill it or else a gigantic pillar of fire will spawn from your feet and kill you?  how many times???? OMG!!  ARRRRGHGHHHHH.

But my god the dps is crap. on my warrior, i was really miserable at level 81 doing 4k dps inside Throne of Tides.  Then it jumped somehow at level 82 to a whopping 6k.  and if things are done correctly, i can hit 8k+ on some fights.  but that's it.  averaging around 6k and we're not even talking heroic geared.  on my deathknight, who has a lot more AoE tools, she's able to do 8k normally, in her sleep. and 10k+ if i decide to actually do more (like turn on AMS and IBF while bad AoE is happening, etc).  and what is everyone else doing?  half.  yes, half. no not half 10k, half 8k.  some are doing more, yes, but some just cant cut it.  and what bugs me even more, is that these are heroics.  you know the heroics where you have to have an average ilevel of at least 329.  this is where the learning should have already happened.  i had to drop a heroic deadmines run because a hunter was doing about 3-4k dps.  the last boss is harsh if you cannot get him down before the healer was OOM.  and the lock and i were doing 8k dps each.  we go the boss to about 30% each time we wiped.  and we wiped because the healer was OOM.  another 4k dps would have helped.  it may have even prolonged the healer's mana supply because there would be less damage taken overall.  but we couldnt do it since there just wasnt enough dps output.  this is just one of many examples.  i only had one, ONE experience where everyone was about 10k dps.  we were in vortex pinnicle and all the dps were spot on.  my girlfriend had zero problems with healing and things moved like clockwork.  i actually had competition in the interrupt meter.

Lately, i've been running dungeons without the dps meter on display.  it's on, but not displaying damage.  its switched to interrupts.  and even there, im at the top, usually.  shamans dont windshear, paladins dont rebuke, warriors dont pummel, deathknights dont mind freeze, rogues dont kick, mages dont counterspell, warlocks dont fear (get the glyph), and s.priests dont silence, or fear (again, get the glyph).  i'd like a little competition with the interrupts and i only get it sometimes with the tanks.  everyone else do not.  also, if anyone can suggest a spell for moonkins (besides bearform+bash and typhoon) please comment. =]  but overall, my experience in dungeons are somewhat a mixed bag of fun with minimal challege.  there's not a lot of people to compete with really.  whenever there's a rogue who actually kicks, i find it very challenging to keep up with the interrupt counts.  but more often than not, this is not the case.

Just this past weekend, i decided to level my druid again.  this time, she's going to be boomkin (respec'd and ready, with the pvp healing spec removed) instead of healing.  she deleted much of her pvp gear and upgraded from her mixed t8 and t9 gear to cata "greens".  then went on over to Hyjal, Vashjir, Uldum and Twilight highlands to farm herbs.  im sure she got about one whole level's worth of experience from just picking herbs.  while picking herbs, she's queued in the dungeon finder.  now when i first started this, i knew zero about being a moonkin.  actually, redhawk, graylo and sunfyrre were awesome resources at helping me understand boomkin dps. thanks guys!! =]  and i quickly understood the basics of boomkin dps.  dont ask me what eclipse is for, i just know that i start spamming another spell when it does happen. =P

most of the weekend was used to adjust to the style of dps.  honestly, its kinda different from any other dps styles i've ever played.  as a caster, sure, Shooting Stars procs are like anything else, but the whole sun/moon eclipse mechanic was completely new to me. by the end of the holiday weekend, three levels and about 10 random dungeons, i was able to go from 3k dps to 6k dps.  im sitting pretty at level 83, almost 84, doing "the most" dps in most groups i run with. most, until the last two.

Again, keep in mind that not a lot of people interrupt and there are still some folks who still stand in bad.  i battle rez people for the sheer sake of not wanting to be yelled at (although i would love to have the group wipe sometimes) later on.  also, sometimes its the tank that needs to be b-rez'd during a boss fight, so that's quite important to rez them in that case.  but anyway, i've encountered, finally, a repeat of wrath. here's what happened.

Tank: So someone mark CC please.
Healer:  you dont need any CC.
Tank: oh right!

We were in normal stonecore. The tank was level 85.  the healer was level 85.  aparently they were running their ret paladin friend who was level 83 doing 3k dps, max. yes. that's all he was doing.  i was the only one there doing more dps than the tank.  although he was level 85, he was pulling just about 6k dps.  in this instance, there was zero crowd control.  everything was AoE'd down.  most of the dps were doing less than the tank, no one was focus-firing and no one was interrupting.  sounds like wrath of the lich king all over again, doesnt it?

i know some 85s are newly ding'ed 85s with some gearing up to do, but there are others who are really beyond normal vortex pin or stonecore.  and even when running your friends through instances, at least have your friend make some effort to try to do well.  at least practice good play by incoporating cc's and interrupts and even pull carefully.  maybe?  all youre doing is making a bad, lazy, inexperienced level 85 who will end up being useless in heroics.  and i've gone through one instance where we failed miserably because two of the dps were doing 3-4k, and the tank was doing 3k.  and i was doing 9....

in any case, my arms are tired from all this carrying.

I wanna [heal] with no pants on

Blah blah blah.... or have the tank tank with no pants on. lol

becaues, your love, your love, your love, my drug...

wait... wrong song.

so i got back on my druid the other night because i was trying to get Akeelah, my lock, some emblems. she just dinged 80 and i was hoping to get enough emblems for one last piece of armor before i logged. well, she got into a heroic nexus run with some folks. then the unexpected happened... the healer dropped group. what?? okay so that's not sooo bad. but we wouldnt queue because one of my friends had the deserter debuff. it wasnt like we could move on. we were missing a healer. so here i was, in a bit of a hurry, wanting to get things over with, thinking about whether i should just hop on to my druid and heal. understand that probably no one cared that i did switch, nor did anyone thank me for saving them 13 minutes of wait time without a healer. but i did it anyway.

and we went off and killed everything. and you know what? it was boring as hell. yes. it was rightclick, rightclick, rightclick... etc. and every once in a while, nourish.

thats it. boring as hell.

so my solution is this. im going to take off my pants.

and im going to ask the tank to take off his pants.

and we're going to dance. and sing. and play kesha songs on youtube while playing wow.
that would be bomb. mai thais optional.

Durrrr....

Went and did Escape from Durnhold. or Durnholde. or something. I dont know why there's that "e" at the end of the word, or why i put it there sometimes. it's just that i've seen many names in wow that has the e at the end, but if the word were spelled without it, it would phonetically be the same. phonetic, as in sounding the same. phonics is not about phonetics. sorry, random thoughts.

Anyway, manders and i went to durnhold and kicked butt (although baby aggro was kicking my butt for some of the instance), and actually did the quest to progress through the story. glad i did because right after, i went to see the dragon disguised as a kid (do you even know why they choose to take on humanoid forms?) and he gave me another quest to enter the black morass. a lot of dark butt jokes can be made from that. but anyway, got the quest and for the rest of the night, we basically goofed off. i queued for a random outland heroic, but was short a tank/healer for most of the night. at about the 1 hour queue mark, i dropped queue and called it a night.

I really think the old LFG tool should be added for those who want to do instances within our realms that the LFD tool isnt going to allow us to do. what do i mean from this is that after a certain level, i am unable to queue for certain instances. or at least, i dont know how to queue for them yet. but i did get a random level 80 warlock added to a scholomance group. so how did that happen? what i wanted to do is to just be, say level 75, and be able to group up to run through keepers of time instances to get rep. i just hit "friendly" and will not be getting anywhere close to honored any time soon. this is mainly due to the lack of people doing black morass. although there may be a few who actually do the starting quest to do durrrrn, i find that its almost impossible to do it in offtimes. also, i've never been in an outland heroic yet. this is due to no tanks or healers queueing for them. sometimes i wish i can tank. but i've resolved to level as DPS this time. i do have vuhdo (like grid/healbot) set up to cleanse/purify/taunt and flash of light heal.

So here's why i like using vuhdo. i love using it on Diinky, which is my druid healer. but that's not the reason why i like using it. its a mix of healbot and clique in a nice little interface. what it allows me to do is use any mouseover commands i have when i mouseover their healthbars. also, i am able to healing/dispell while clicking, or scrolling.

So this is how i use my spells with vuhdo on my ret paladin.
Right click - Righteous Defense (taunt. honestly, i'd rather take the hits than the healer, or clothie. at least i'll have a better chance to live plus it gives the tank a little more time to pull the mobs back.
Left click - Flash of Light. now i try to use this only when i have everything else on cooldown and my Art of War has procced. otherwise, i dont use this.
Mouse Scroll up - Purify.
Mouse Scroll down - Cleanse.

That's it for the ret. as far as purify and cleanse go, they cost the same amount of mana, one cleans poisons too. that's it, i believe. why this isnt one spell is beyond me. but there you have it. for dispells, i get a notice on vudo showing my green healthbars are now purple, or blue, or whatevers. this means they need a purify or cleanse. i go ahead and mouseover their healthbar and scroll up. done.

as for taunts, i will know who has aggro when their healthbar gets a red outline. its not a red glow or anything. their names also turn red and they have >> and << around their names on their health bar. so red outline, red name, red lessthan/greatherthan signs, and i will certainly know who specifically has aggro. if its a mess and i see aggro on the healer, i simply mouseover their name, and rightclick. thats it. never seen a cleanse happy dps have you? nope. and in instances, i usually dont see too many cleansing/dispelling healers either. not until i ask, of course. lol.

Update on Rep.
Now im trying to get rep with Keepers of Time. Im friendly, but would like to at least get honored to unlock heroics. as of right now, i can do hellfire heroics, auchindoun heroics, coilfang heroics and tempest keep heroics. the last set is the caverns of time heroics, which is just durnholde and black morass. and im sure at 80, i can solo these even in heroics. but i do not want to. actually, i want to do it now. not because i am lazy, but because i am level 71 and am ready to keep doing these instances. i do not want to do them at 80. i seriously do not want to. the challenge isnt as great, although soloing it can be challenging, its not as fun as destroying the instance with four other people. since things have been nerfed to oblivion, why cant we just do these instances, even the heroic versions, at 68 instead? this may help change the face of a dying series of instances. i cant actually uninstall wrath so my experience locks at 70. but for me who wants to do these instances at around 70, it becomes a bit frustrating when i have to limit my leveling in order to actually do these instances before i cant do them anymore. meaning, once i hit a magical level, i will not be able to queue for normal outland instances. once i hit another level, i wont be able to queue for heroic outland instances. and there's some recipes that i'd like to purchase. i really want these stupid, but somewhat useful enchanting recipes, like threat to gloves or dodge to cloak. who uses that anymore? but i wantsss it!!

------------------------
Last thought for today, i think.... lol

my girlfriend just got a new laptop. so i might start playing with her. things may get interesting soon. but i'll have to teach her how to play and things. i wont teach her everything i know and i definitely will not show her how to play like i play. some things should be left to be discovered and i think its best to be discovered on your own. although she is more of a social rather than a hardcore player, it will be interesting to at least do a few things with her in-game. she'll definitely be using the dressing room feature a lot, and im sure her pick of clothes and gear will be based a lot on looks. but that's fine. gear design is there for a reason. hopefully, she'll want to play as horde. lol. we'll see.
