Gemming the New LFR Loot
I did find a problem though, when i bought the pieces, i had a new problem. Peerless stats! that costs 800g in the AH. i am a leatherworker so i can cheaply make my own leg enchants, but i am sure the leg enchants would cost bundles too, upwards from 500g to 800g. Finally, there were a total of six new gem slots to fill. SIX!! where five of them were red. That's a huge amount of red gems to buy. considering, at the moment, red gems are about 300g in the AH, it doesnt make too much sense for me to buy them now. BUT to sell them!!! so i will be selling my gems again in the AH. i know that ive talked about selling gems and enchants in earlier blog posts, but here it is live and i have not ventured into the market that much. i have, however, been making about 4k gold each time i mass post some gems. it's not as high as many of the other people, but i think it's enough for me. let me try to break 500k by the end of this expansion. sounds like a good goal.

Gems and Inscription come 4.2
Uncommon, uncut gems will no longer have the vendor price of 5g. What does that mean? almost nothing.
Well, for the lazy, it means that they cannot vendor their stacks of Alicites or Nightstones anymore.
And what about the not-so-lazy people? they're still going to craft pendants, rings and spikes just like before for their Enchanter to DE. and for those who have X-mute Master Alchemists? I still see these items transformed into Shadowspirit diamonds.
This patch wont break anything for the shuffle, or whatever you want to call it. it will basically get those lazy bastids off their lazy ass and actually do some more work if they want to make near the profit margin they had before.
Predictions:
- Uncommon gems (alicites, nightstones, etc) will drop in price since the lazy people who used to vendor them will now sell them on the AH, flooding supplies.
- Uncommon gems used for daily quests will retain its value, or drop slightly.
- Enchanting mats prices will decrease slightly due to some folks actually making pendants, rings and spikes to DE instead of vendoring them. They may even level up their own enchanter to do this or sell the items in the AH.
- Shadowspirit diamonds will decrease in value slightly. Due to the same reason above with alchemists instead of enchanters.
- Obsidium and Elementium ores will decrease in price due to the oversupply of enchanting mats and shadowspirit diamonds. However, Obsidium and Elementium will have a floor (although we'll probably never get there-4.5gold/stack elementium). As JC'ers find their secondary market (dusts, essences and shadowspirit diamonds) overflowing, thus dropping prices, their margins will decrease. therefore, they will continue to look for cheaper and cheaper ores. i do not know what the max would be for a stack of elementium ore yet, as prices for that is dictated by prices for gems, dusts, etc. but overall, a decrease will result.
Deductions:
The changes to vendored prices ultimately brings prices down on various goods used to buff up players' stats. This is a good change as it will make enchating scrolls and shadowspirit diamonds a little more available to the more frugal (i say frugal because you really can be rich in wow. its easy. some people just dont like spending). This change will help support the boom that will occur during 4.2 when everyone gets new gear from firelands (raids or dungeons or rep). not only that, those who were stuck on the first boss of ZG will finally be able to down him and attain more gear. the casuals and baddies will also be able to upgrade their gear as well (normal raids nerfed combined with many class buffs). overall, the turnover in gear will be great, and this change to the vendor price of uncommon gems will help meet the demand.
Also, as prices drop. JCers will find it difficult to justify paying 40-50g per stack of elementium ore. eventually the prices will drop, decreasing the daily profits from the farmers. when this profit decreases, they'll have to find ways to circumvent this. either avoid the AH to recover on fees, or farm more ore. farming more ore will increase supply, thus decreasing the prices even more. maybe they'll focus more on herbalism or skinning instead.
The farmers are ultimately the ones to lose here. they'll be the ones with 5000 stacks of ore to sell at a lower price. imagine if elementium dropped by 10g a stack, that's 10g x 5000 stacks someone is about to lose potential profit on. in this way, it appears that bliz is tackling the problem (although they wont solve it, it does cause a slight dent to it) of gold farmers and gold sellers. they are the ones that are up day and night farming ore. it's no secret to the rest of the world how they fund their gold selling business. especially when the dollar appreciates so much when it goes into the right country. Blizz will just make it a little harder for these guys to make a dollar.
In any case, there you have it. my deductions as to why these changes occur in the first place. Bliz already set it up nicely the past six months, giving an imaginary bottom to ore prices (through vendor price for uncommon uncut gems), then removing it when they need to increase supply from the obsidium/elementium shuffle.
Final Note: please note that we do get dusts and essences through other means. however, because this process is so widely used, a large chunk of the enchanting market is fueled by the gemming industry. therefore, a significant change in the JC industry will cause serious changes in the enchanting industry as well. as for shadowspirits, this portion of the market is entirely dependant on JC'ers. there's no other way to get shadowspirit diamonds except to xmute it from uncommon gems.
Final Final Note: Since patch 4.2 will add significant amounts of new content (as opposed to 4.1 which only saw two 5-man dungeons) and more accessible current content, we will see a large increase for enchants and augmentations to upgrades attained. and since bliz is going to counter that spike in demand with higher supply, this will mean one thing: JC'ers will not see anything like Glyphmas.
Thanks for reading and have a great day!

Now i dont have big dreams in wow like getting vial of the sands on all my toons. heck, only one toon has super fast 310% flying, and thats my miner (with crusader aura!). and most of them do not have big fancy items. only one toon has a mechano-hog. i am somewhat of a very frugal person in this game. i dont spend too much gold and what i do have, i save up. the only times i actually spend a lot of gold is when i am buying ore to prospect, or herbs to mill, or frozen orbs to make who knows what. ;)
But i do find myself getting closer to my goals. if i keep up what im currently doing, i will have 200k gold by the end of the month. now i do only play the AH when nothing else interest me. lately, heroics are a blah, raiding is nil, farming is even blah-er. i barely want to log on and when i do, its really just to play with my girlfriend and play the AH. i dont even do professions anymore. I still have to level up my leatherworking, my enchanting and my tailoring. I have alchemy maxed, inscription almost maxed, bs maxed and jc maxed. i really do not need to try to make gold from LW/Tailoring enchants or from enchanting itself (the dust/essences sell well already). getting closer to my goals will mean one of two things: i will do something else or i will continue to make gold on the AH.
now there are more paths to take when i do move on, like how many "something else" can i list and do? or if i continue making gold, will it still be as a JC? or will i try to dive into other markets? if i dont care too much about returns, should i even bother with going into a "lucrative" market?
If i were to move on to other markets but still play within the AH, i would have to be OK with collecting less gold each day. this is fine with me, so long as i make sales. i think the only thing that bothers me more than not finding crafting mats in the AH when i need it, is to find expired auctions in my mailbox. i love the feeling of having a sale, whether it be for 5g or 50g. now 50g is better, but 5g isnt too bad at all. at least i removed a useless item from my inventory... that's my thinking anyway. I can go into enchanting, but i'll still have to rely on my jewelcrafter to supply a lot of my mats. My leatherworker can make leg enchants but it does look like the mats cost just as much as the final product. there's a lot of competition out there and perhaps finding the right market to list items in can be a game in and of itself. currently, my tailor is making bags because spellthread doesnt make positive gold. my leatherworker is on hold because there's no positive gold potential there either. my scribe is pulling in about 200g a day on glyphs (yes, sadly) but does slowly sell infernal inks.
Update: I wrote this post several weeks ago and thought that i published it. however, it looks like its been missing and i never realized. =D
I jsut wanted to say that i am at about $170,000 gold and ready for that final stretch. the last couple of weeks have seen quite a slow down in the gem market. everyone seems to be done farming the troll dungeons and sales have dropped quite significantly. This isnt to say that i havent been selling. Gems arent selling so well (although i still make about 2k a day, down from 3-5k a day). but i've been selling bags, enchants and various pvp items. these net me about 2-5k for the whole week. I've also been on my second server working on some things so that's been taking up a lot of time too.
For bags. i see netherweaves, frostweaves and otherworldly bags. the otherworldly bags sell slowly so i sometimes have to bark it in trade, for significantly lower than the AH (about 50g). but that's still a hefty profit per bag.
In terms of enchants, i've made some leg enchants (both from LW and tailoring) and post those 5 at a time on the AH. they sell slowly as well. i often have to repost these things several times to sell them all.
Overall, things have slowed and it seems people are busy rifting or leveling alts. now i have to figure out how to profit from all the alts!
But i think after my push to $200K is over, i will simply make gold just to cover costs. oh and maybe spend it on a mount, or two. =D

Goal of 200k Gold for Cata
Now i dont have big dreams in wow like getting vial of the sands on all my toons. heck, only one toon has super fast 310% flying, and thats my miner (with crusader aura!). and most of them do not have big fancy items. only one toon has a mechano-hog. i am somewhat of a very frugal person in this game. i dont spend too much gold and what i do have, i save up. the only times i actually spend a lot of gold is when i am buying ore to prospect, or herbs to mill, or frozen orbs to make who knows what. ;)

Overall, it looks like there isnt much to work with besides gems. but gems can be fickle and many people have tried to enter into this market. its a market with a lot of potential and a lot of competition. My mantra is usually, if i put up 5k gold in sale items, im sure to get about 2k gold in sales. what doesnt sell can be relisted. that's easy for a market with a lot of turnover. but in a market where things are relatively stale (compared to gems), like leg enchants. but if pants are replaced as often as belts (belt buckles) and headpieces (meta gems), then why not. why not offer up some decent leg enchants and make a couple hundred gold a day? i dont know. it would greatly simplify my life and lower the time i need to spend at the AH.
Finally, i am slowly getting to the 200k mark. my plans to reach it by month-end is steady unless i end up taking a few days break. even if i dont reach that goal, i figured it's a whole lot better than not trying at all.

Rich is Relative
i thought for a second and wondered. very rich to him can either mean the net earnings of 950g, or the total revenues of about 7500-8000 gold. for me, i didnt drop below 100k gold throughout the whole buying frenzy (and you know i just hit 100k gold a few days prior). So maybe i did make him really rich. but to me it is an investment in the future. i can turn that 8k gold around and probably end up making over 30k with it. netting me about 20k+ in gold. the only reason i am able to do this is because i have two other characters. one is an alchemist who will gladly make shadowspirit diamonds. the other is an enchanter who will gladly make dust/essences out of some of the alicite pendants i make. to make it even better, she also enchants scrolls and leaves them in the AH (you know, the enchants that people dont make 20 of to level through). my 100k+ gold was made by several people. it wasnt completely my JCer. i have a scribe who funded herself through the entire inscription process (buy mats, make glyphs, sell glyphs, use profits to buy more mats). i make belt buckles, leg armor enchants, glyphs, rare enchants and gems. these are the primary sources of gold for me. but the bulk of the gold comes from JC and the mundane daily activity of relisting expired auctions and crafting more gems to replace the ones that sell. Eventually i will reach 200k. that's my goal for cata. =P and hopefully then, i'll be able to say that im a rich man. again, rich is relative. for me, im still pretty much broke as i see the 100k sitting in my bag as "investment funds". they're there so i can use to make more gold. that is all. anyway, happy tuesday! see you all later!

More JC woes.
Some crazy people are selling Insightful and Relentless Earthsiege diamonds for well over 100g each. but im sure they will make a sale or two, and anger quite a few others who are looking for a good deal and will resort to guild/trade to find their meta gems crafted. But what this gives me is the opportunity to sell at 60, 70 or 80g. on my "populated" realm, they would go for about 30-40 g each, but here, they're scarce. I have to think about why they are. Although Timothy Jones can teach you a few earthsiege cuts, learning Insightful or Relentless costs 5 JC tokens. perhaps many of the JC'ers are mass producing the cheaper learnable recipes to level, thus flooding the market with swift skyflares. but when it comes to the 5-token recipes, they're scarce. I would assume the my competitors will start to watch that market a little more and sell for less. but I am hoping to come home tonight with my auctions sold and the lowest auction to be 100g. hopefully.
as far as making a lot of gold from JC, I must say there isnt much out there to sell or make. I can prospect and sell raw jems, or vendor some cut ones. that will make me some profit. heck, I can even smelt the saronites and get a few good gold back from the vendor price. I cant even prospect adamantite because the price of a stack is almost the price of one Mercurial Adamantite. so there's no profit there. there's also no "vanity" item that JC'ers can really make for people since most of their goods cannot be seen. You cannot show off a necklace, ring, or a gem. I've even tossed a few items into my guild bank, just because its often more work than its worth to try to sell some of these items. they are great gems for the outland leveler as they're better than the outland rare quality gems. come on. and for cheap! but no one bites because the equivalent rare gems from northrend are almost at rock bottom prices… why buy uncommon? in any case, JC has me completely mystified. But I did find a little place to make some gold back. although its slow, its better than nothing.

JC has me depressed. =[
So I kinda figured gem prices were going to drop, but I didn’t know it was going to be so bad.
So bad where? on my low pop server. and why is it so bad? because of patch 3.3.3. I was used to collecting about 1k a day on average (and spending only about 30% of that on more mats) from my JC profession last year. this was pre 3.3.2. I had gems flying off the shelves. but as time goes by, my high pop server has turned into a medium pop server. not only that, but since patch 3.3.3, people have found an alternative to buying gems. they farm BG's, or have already farmed BG's and have a billion stone keeper's shards and honor out the ears, and end up buying epic gems with honor. they either sell that, or have it cut for a tip (usually 10-15g). done. so rare gem sales (and ultimately, prices) are dropping as well as epic gem sales.
I was a little apprehensive about doing JC in a low pop server, but I figured that it shouldn’t be so bad. people will still need gems, and people will always be gearing up new alts. what I fail to realise is that gems are not really an option until outlands. and even then, there's very few items that needs to be gemmed. some people don’t even gem (even with the low level gems, although my mage/priest/druid/lock all had runed bloodstones on everything, AH cost is about 2g a piece, every affordable for the leveling toon), so I figured I may have tapped into a dying profession. maybe what I need to do is collect recipes (I do the dailies, but am not 80 yet so I cannot run the instances for some of the other cuts) and wait until enough people get fed up with the gem market that they quit. I can then step in and sell various gems. I do not think I'll offer a wide selection as in my previous realm. what I think I also need to do is keep gems selling slowly, and when I finally hit 80, I can actually learn to cut the epic cuts. I will have a list of rare gem cuts that I think will sell well (usually red/yellow, and one blue) and the rest will have to be epic cuts. this will cut down on my spending tokens on useless cuts. some cuts sell for as little as 6g. that results in a sale, but I've also seen 6g cuts come back unsold. srsly.
so, my plan for gems is this: save up JC tokens to use on epic recipes. made due with what I have now. upon reaching 80, I can then run instances for the rare gem cuts. also, I will purchase the random world drop recipes with gold. that’s my plan with JC. Now since manders is done farming herbs, we can finally, finally do some outland instances and quests. Manders is my friend from my old realm that had to switch. so I switched with her and are slowly progressing towards level 80. she spent several days just running around azeroth and flying around outland picking flowers in order to level her alchemy. with sungrass going for 60g a stack, and other herbs going for the same ridiculous prices, we're better off farming our own herbs or mining our own ores. im still making decent change from Adamantite ore and Cobalt ore.

Making gold on a low pop server
I find myself mistified, somewhat disallusioned, that my auctions on my new, low pop server have ended without sales. srsly, when i post gem sales on my medium pop server, i usually sell at least half of them during prime time, then the other half gets relisted (due to undercutters) before going to bed to sell to the overnight market, and i end up with a good amount of gold (even with late night undercutters, or early morning undercutters jumping in). but in my low pop server, i find that there is very little demand for gems, and perhaps that is the reason for the low prices of some of these gems.
lets take an example. titanium ore. this goes for about 275-300 gold a stack on my medium pop server. in my low pop server, they are at 200-250 gold. that's not bad considering gem prices are lower to match supply prices. Basically, the price for ore is set by the demand for gems primarily, and to a lesser degree, metal bars for crafting engineering and bs products.
Since demand on my low pop server is low, prices are low-"er". i find myself in competition with several other gem cutters, which makes supply, or at least, availabily, high. low demand and high supply equals low sales. So what will sell well in a low pop environment? There have been some sales, however. I will not lie. some gems do sell. of the initial, say, 500g i've spent on saronite ore, i made about 500g in return. about 300-350g was on cut gems, and the rest were on selling raw chalcedonys, bloodstones, sun crystals, etc. i dont have accurate figures.
One thing i do notice is that low level crafting mats do sell well. especially for those leveling professions. also, i do see leveling byproducts on the market often. if you go to any of the resource sites with leveling guides, and just check out, say, jewelcrafting or blacksmithing, or leatherworking or whatnot, just make a list of some of the items they suggest you make in order to level your profession. now, go to the AH and search for it. Take, for instance, Pendant of the Agate Shield. Im not going to link it. you can wowhead/alak/thobott it yourself. but when i searched it the other night, i saw 20. yes, someone made 20 to level up JC. propbably for 15 skill points. then moved on. there's a bunch of these out there. people are just tossing these up for half the price of mats, just to get rid of it. i think i'll level a new character and learn enchanting. this may be a prime server to level enchanting. but then again, i havent researched this with medium pop or high pop servers either. so i dont know. i just see the opportunity is there.
What did sell for me? Copper at 15g/stack. Tin at 20g/stack, Iron at 20g/stack. Mithril, depending on time of the week (there's some idiot with 100 million stacks of it posting on certain days) it can go for as low as 30g/stack to as high as 45g/stack. Thorium is a mystery to me. It went for 13g/st on one day (which i should have snatched 20 stacks up) and 35g/st another day. i guess not too many people got the memo that thorium grows like weeds in un-goro crater. but this leads me to think that if someone, or maybe two or three people, are leveling mining at the same time, and happen to be selling their freshly-gathered thorium ores, that the market will drop really fast. there is, after all, less people leveling BS, JC or Eng. so the ores will stay in the AH just a tad longer, long enough for the other guy, who's been collecting thorium in EPL, to drop his cache in the AH at a lower price.
But in a low pop server, what's to do at end levels? for a few, they'd level alts. what attracts new players? a server that's low in population or high? for many people, a low pop server will be less overwhelming and offer more chances to cross paths with people they've met. so with this ASSUMPTION in mind, i think that the most money will be made in the leveling area of progression, and not the end game.
I say this only with the experince of a miner. for cloth, leather, or even fish, it may not apply. but i've found that ore prices, per stack, are ranked as follows:
Titanium
Adamantite/Khorium
Mithril
Cobalt/Fel Iron/Thorium (apart from that strange night where they were going for cheap)
Tin/Iron
Copper/Saronite
Eternium
Dark Iron
Lesser Bloodstone (lol)
So, a low level beginner can pick up mining and earn as much gold as a 77 running around through StormPeaks mining. imagine that. on my server Adamantite is going for 40-50g. i've made about 2k gold just mining in nagrand while waiting for queues (yes, my dk is q-ing as dps) and earning maghar rep. i have a talbuk. =] what's sad is that when i was ready to hit northrend, i stayed in nagrand. but i really didnt care. i just wanted to mine on my slowflyer and finish up maghar rep. so that's what i did until level 70. By the time i was ready (last friday), i went and bought most of the mats needed to level JC. i also had to run around and mine mithril since no one was selling mithril on that day (odd how that one guy who was selling a million stacks did not relist that day, but decidedly undercut me a few days prior). also, i had about 5 stacks of adamantite that i had in my bags, so i bought another 5 stacks and prospected most. i did have to make some bars, turn the dust into mercurial, and make a few rings and chains. I started that day with a little over 3k gold. i ended up with about 1.5k gold. it wasnt that hard to level JC. there are some overpriced items, like moss agate, and small lustrous pearls, but other than that, the prices for mats were decent.
What i did find out:
- Gems from prospected thorium can make a profit, if you buy thorium at a good price. Blue sapphires, star rubies and the yellow one (i forget the name, i'll edit it later) are worthless. but huge emeralds, large opals, and something else, i forget. i'll look it up, but those gems are worth 10g-15g each. so depending on what i am prospecting, i can actually make some gold on my investment.
- gems from outland are, for the most part, worthless, though you might be able to sell your uncut leftovers to those who will not be prospecting ore. but i do like to prospect adamantite for the the dust. the cut gems do not sell well. try to sell the uncut golden dreanites for more tho, as those are the only ones i can think of that sell well. they are pricey due to its demand to make normal flying carpets.
- skip the outland blue gem cuts (350-375). they're useless. skip straight to northred green cuts at 350.
- be friendly with lower city. there's one green cut from the quartermaster that will get you to 350.
that's all i can think of right now. in any case, JC didnt cost me as much as i thought, tho i really stopped at 420 to pick up the dailies and the rare cuts from dalaran. the rest will come in time as i gain more recipes. i still have 8 more levels to... level. so im not even in a hurry to get to 450. those skill levels will come in time.
overall, JC is making me some gold at my level, and has left me with nothing to do between instance queues but quest. i dont really run around mining and killing ogres for their beads any more. yay for that. onwards to gaining rep! Kaluakk for the chest piece and design. then off to either the wolvars or oracles. then.... heroics design drops and faction rep bought designs. i'll have most of the cuts soon enough.
